Hi Peter,

Sorry it's taken a while for this to appear ( I have to approve posts before they appear on the blog). I had no internet for my last few days in Morocco, but I'm back now.
Please send my best wishes to Granny and Gramps if you are still there (and say hi to Mum and Peter). Good luck with explaining the internet to granny - I don't even understand how it works!
Hopefully over the next few days I will have some more blog posts up. Lots of stuff happened while I was away, I just need to remember it, and write about it now.

Anyway, hope you are all well,

Ben

Dear Ben,

Great to be able to see this plus also read only some of your experiences and observations.

I am with Granny at the moment at Kilarden, have been visiting Gramps he is doing well but dont know when he will be out. I we are accessing the internet via my HTC and laptop. Technology I thought could only be talked about an experienced by others but it does work!
I have shown Granny your great images. She cannot understand how I have got them here. I can't explain!
I am so glad you were able to make it out there in the end. It looks as if some of those great trees are "Atlas Cedar" or Cedrus atlantica. The most common form being Cedrus atlantica Glauca, a more blue form. You may have seen some of these on your travels.

It would be great to get a response from you at some stage in order I can show Granny and Gramps.

Regards

I struggled to get out! I spent another night in the forest this week too. No monkeys this time, but the stars were amazing. It's so nice to be out here just doing this. I'll update the blog again over the next few days hopefully with more tales of what's been going on.

Hi Dom,
Just checked out the video on Vimeo, and it looks very good. It must be a bit tricky to get focus perfectly.

What I currently do on the 7D is use the camera autofocus (mirror flips down then back up again) to focus quickly then adjust it from there if required using the 5 or 10x magnification.

I'm also thinking of getting a monitor instead of a loupe. The main reason being that if I'm sitting down filming at a low level I cant move round with the camera when panning, so wouldn't be able to keep my eye to the loupe. A monitor attached to the tripod leg would solve that. Keep my head in the same position while I pan and pull focus. Now I just need to save up for one!

Well it does the job:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/domgreves/5544750736/

It does become essential to nail the focus at x3 however and I'm not sure how a loupe would attach to the swivel screen.

Mine doesn't seem to generate any .THM sidecar files which is frustrating.

Presumably anything above 3x zoom is a digitally magnified picture otherwise there wouldn't be enough pixels on the 18MP sensor.

No luck at Focus. Canon weren't there. Apparently they reduced their advertising budget, so I didn't get to play. :-(

In terms of mounting the long lens I've not shot much in wind before, so not really had any problems. I think that a support at the long end would help, but the tripod and head needs to be really stable too the heavier the better.
