The natural world has always fascinated me, and over the last four years my interest in natural history photography and film-making has grown from non existent to borderline obsessive! I love the fact that I can use a camera not only to record what I see in front of me, but to create something interesting, beautiful and compelling that I can share with others. As a person who was never particularly good at art I relish the creativity that photography and film-making allows me.
In September 2010 I started on a MA Degree course in Wildlife Documentary Production and, to tell the truth, it’s not felt like a degree because I’ve had so much fun. I’ve learned about every step on the production pathway, and I’ve taken an ideas and turned them into films. I’ve spent countless hours trying to film otters, I set up camp beside a waterfall in order to capture the enigmatic dipper but without a doubt the highlight of my year was the final project in which I produced (and directed, filmed, sound recorded and edited) a film about barbary macaques in the Middle Atlas Mountains in Morocco. This included a month filming abroad which was not only a great opportunity to get close to these fantastic primates, but also an amazing learning experience and a little taster of what I hope to do in the future.
Over the coming months I will take the first steps towards achieving my dream of becoming a wildlife cameraman and hope that the experiences that I’ve already had will stand me in good stead for this.
